Turku - Hirvensalo - Bunkers hill    |    30km

Welcome to Turku! This trip will be about 30km long (depending on number of runs you do in the bike park) and we'll start on the coast of the river Aura with a morning coffee in Café Manuela while enjoying the lively riverside and a nearby fountain. If you travel with a car, there's a free parking in front of the café as well as bike stands.

Take a warm up lap around the city to enjoy local sights before you start shredding!

Once you get a grasp of the city, it's time to head for some nice trails. This time, we'll spend the day on the island Hirvensalo. Local ski slope used to serve as a bike park and surrounding woods offer many MTB-friendly trails called Paavonpolut. These trails are well marked and you can follow them in the Citynomadi app.

TOP TIP: When riding to Hirvensalo, take a short ride on the local City Ferry called Föri, which will get you from one side of the river to the other! You'll save some energy and it's a very nice experience to sail for change!

Once you arrive to the bottom of the slope in Hirvensalo, it's up to you in what order will you ride local trails. You have 4 options - Paavonpolku, which covers most of the island, Bunkers hill with ridiculously nice MTB-purpose built trails, former Turku Bike Park where the descents are a little longer and finally a dirt pump track.

We would advise you to start with the 15km long Paavonpolku, which will serve as a very suficient warm up for the rest of your day. It's marked with a blue runner (mostly) on trees and it's pretty gnarly although the character of the trail is very flat. There's a large amount of rocks and roots, so you better prepare your butt for some hammering if you ride a hardtail.

You can follow the trail either via the Citynomadi app or using our map below (mark the map with a star and then open it in Google Maps app). Please keep in mind that cycling on fitness trails is not allowed even if these are part of the Paavonpolku trail. You'll arrive to such fitness trail in Toijainen, but you can easily avoid it by riding on the Toijainen natural trail marked with yellow dots on trees. Our map will lead you through this trail.

Having fun out there? Finished the trail yet? Great! You might be a bit hungry now, so let's warm up some sausages at the fireplace in Toijainen. You'll get there by following the Paavonpolku from the North and then continuing on a Toijainen natural trail after crossing Särkilahdentie. It's marked with yellow dots again.

Local fireplace is fairly simple (rim with a grate on top), but serves the purpose and it's on an elevated place with fabulous views!

And now finally it's time for the downhill shredding! As for 2019, the Bunkers hill's trails are used more frequently and therefore their state is much better than the trails in the former bike park. However, we suggest you try both locations as these trails are very close to each other and they're both very challenging and fun.

Shred until the sun sets or you run out of tyres, whatever comes first! If you fancy a swim, there's a beach in Ispoinen, about 2km from the Hirvensalo bridge. Grab a beer on the way and make yourself a relaxing end of the day in Turku.
